Are you looking for a smarter way to cut your power bills, rely less on the grid, and maximise the benefits of your solar energy? A solar battery storage system could be exactly what you need. At C & D Electrical and Instrumentation, we deliver tailored battery storage solutions for homes, farms, and businesses across the Atherton Tablelands—helping locals stay powered, even when the grid lets us down.

WHY SOLAR BATTERY STORAGE MATTERS IN FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND

ree

Here in the Atherton Tablelands, we enjoy sunny skies and fresh country air—but like many regional communities in Far North Queensland, we also face rising electricity costs and occasional grid instability. Power outages, voltage fluctuations, and extended blackouts aren't uncommon, especially during the summer storm season or cyclones.

Battery storage gives you energy independence. With the right system, you can store excess solar power during the day and use it at night or during outages—keeping your home, farm, or business running smoothly while cutting back on expensive grid power.

Battery storage systems also support sustainability by helping you consume more of your own clean, renewable energy and draw less from fossil-fueled grid sources. That’s a win-win for both your pocket and the environment.

HOW SOLAR BATTERY SYSTEMS WORK

ree

Let’s break it down simply. Your solar panels generate electricity whenever the sun shines—but if you don’t use it all straight away, that extra energy usually goes back into the grid. Without a battery, you’re essentially giving away your surplus energy (and buying it back later at a higher rate).

With a battery storage system, however, you can capture and store that excess energy to use later—at night, on cloudy days, or during blackouts.

A typical battery storage system includes:

  1. The battery itself (measured in kilowatt-hours or kWh):

This stores your energy for later use. The size of the battery determines how much electricity you can store and use when the sun isn't shining. Batteries typically range from 5kWh to 15kWh for homes, and much larger capacities for farms and businesses. Common types of batteries include lithium-ion, lithium ferro phosphate (LiFePO₄), and lead-acid.

Battery Type

Advantages

Disadvantages

Lithium-ion

- High energy density (stores more energy in a smaller size)

- Long lifespan (8–15 years)

- Fast charging and discharging

- Lightweight and compact

- High efficiency (~90–95%)

- Higher upfront cost - Can degrade faster in extreme heat (unless well managed)

- Requires built-in battery management system (BMS)

Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LiFePO₄)

- Extremely long lifespan (up to 10,000 cycles or ~15–20 years)

- Very safe and stable (low fire risk)

- Handles high temperatures better

- Maintains performance over time

- Slightly lower energy density (larger and heavier than lithium-ion for same capacity)

- Higher upfront cost (similar to or slightly more than lithium-ion)

Lead-acid (AGM & Gel)

- Lower upfront cost

- Proven, widely available technology

- Suitable for smaller systems and backup-only setups

- Shorter lifespan (3–7 years) - Lower efficiency (~70–85%) - Heavier and bulkier

- Requires ventilation and regular maintenance

- Limited usable capacity (~50%)

Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular due to their high efficiency, longer lifespan, and smaller size. They also offer faster charging times and deeper discharges, meaning you can use more of the stored energy before needing a recharge.

  1. A hybrid inverter or battery inverter:

This converts energy between AC (what your home or business uses) and DC (what your solar panels and battery store). The inverter plays a key role in managing the flow of electricity between your panels, battery, home, and the grid.

Inverter Type

Advantages

Disadvantages

Hybrid Inverter

- Combines solar inverter and battery inverter in one unit

- Simplifies system design and installation

- Allows seamless energy management (solar + battery + grid)

- Compatible with new solar + battery installs

- Higher upfront cost than standard solar inverter

- May not be compatible with older solar systems

- Harder to retrofit into existing systems

Battery Inverter

- Ideal for retrofitting batteries to existing solar systems

- Flexible option to add battery storage later

- Can work independently of solar panels

- Requires a separate solar inverter (two devices needed)

- Slightly less efficient due to multiple conversion steps

- More complex wiring/setup

Standard Solar Inverter (no battery)

- Lower cost

- Simpler installation for solar-only systems

- Widely available and proven

- Cannot connect a battery directly without adding a separate battery inverter later

- Less flexible for future upgrades

  1. An energy management system (EMS):

This helps you monitor and control how energy is stored and used. It lets you see in real-time how much solar you're generating, how full your battery is, and how much power you're importing or exporting to the grid.

Many systems come with a smartphone app or online portal so you can easily track your energy usage and make informed decisions. An EMS can also automatically optimise when to charge or discharge your battery based on your habits, weather forecasts, or even peak electricity prices—helping you maximise savings.

  1. Backup gateway or automatic transfer switch (optional but recommended):

This component isolates your home or business from the grid during a blackout so that your battery can safely provide backup power. Without this, your battery won’t automatically kick in during an outage. It ensures that critical appliances like fridges, lights, medical equipment, and water pumps stay powered during a grid failure.

  1. Battery management system (BMS):

Built into most modern batteries, the BMS protects the battery from overcharging, overheating, and deep discharging. It keeps the battery operating safely and efficiently, and prolongs its lifespan by balancing the cells.

We help you work out what size system you need based on your energy habits—whether you're running fridges, pumps, air conditioners, or machinery.

THE BENEFITS OF SOLAR BATTERY STORAGE IN THE TABLELANDS

ree

Installing a solar battery system offers several advantages:

  • Reduced Energy Bills:

Use more of your own solar power instead of buying expensive electricity from the grid. This can protect you from future electricity price hikes and reduce your long-term energy costs. Over time, the savings can offset the upfront cost of installing the battery system, as highlighted in the benefits of solar battery storage.

  • Backup Power:

Stay powered during outages—ideal for rural properties and businesses where downtime costs money. A reliable battery system keeps critical appliances like fridges, pumps, and lights running when the grid goes down. This minimises disruption to your household or business operations, keeping you comfortable and productive.

  • Greater Energy Independence:

Rely less on an unstable or costly grid. This gives you more control over your energy supply, especially in remote or off-grid locations. You’ll worry less about blackouts, voltage drops, and rising power prices.

  • Lower Carbon Footprint:

Use cleaner energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By maximising your use of renewable solar energy, you directly contribute to a more sustainable future. This helps reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-generated electricity and supports Australia’s clean energy transition.

  • Increased Property Value:

Homes with solar + battery systems are attractive to eco-conscious buyers. Energy-efficient homes often sell faster and at a premium compared to those without renewable energy systems. Buyers are also drawn to lower running costs and future-proof energy solutions.
